Technical reading guide

How to read a photovoltaic module datasheet before selecting a model.

A datasheet is not a product ranking. It is the model-specific source used to verify electrical, mechanical and warranty information against the conditions of a real project.

Direct answer

Start with the exact model code, then read the fields as one connected specification.

Confirm the series, model and published power range first. Then check efficiency, dimensions, weight and the complete electrical, mechanical, warranty and certification sections in the corresponding PDF. A single number should never replace the full project review.

Step 1 · Identify the document

Three identifiers must stay together.

Series names help navigation, but technical review must remain attached to the exact model and its published wattage range.

Series

Use it to locate the product family.

HISEER 4N, 5N, 6N and 7N organize the current Sunhorn portfolio, but one series can contain more than one model and product direction.

Exact model

Treat the model code as the primary reference.

Codes such as SH21R-66H-D and SH21R-264H-D are different products. Keep the full code in technical notes, comparisons and enquiries.

Power range

Read a range as a published range.

Do not turn the highest value into a universal output claim. Use the range to identify the listed model, then review the exact PDF.

Step 2 · Read connected fields

No single field decides project fit.

The following fields answer different questions. Read them together and compare them with the project design rather than using one headline value as a shortcut.

Power range

Helps identify the published output classes available within the model range. It does not confirm stock, project yield or suitability by itself.

Maximum module efficiency

Supports comparison of a published datasheet field, but must be considered with module format, system design and operating conditions.

Dimensions

Connect the module footprint to roof or site layout, mounting design, access, spacing and installation planning.

Weight

Use the model weight in structural, handling and installation review. Do not assume similar wattage means similar physical format.

Warranty information

Read the product and linear power warranty fields in the exact PDF and keep them separate from current commercial terms.

Document source and language

Use the current official PDF for the exact model and the language required by the project team. Avoid copying technical values from an unrelated series.

Electrical review

Read the operating point, limits and test conditions together.

Power alone does not describe how a module connects to an inverter or behaves when temperature and irradiance change.

Voltage and current at the maximum power point

Vmp and Imp describe the voltage and current at the maximum-power point under the stated test conditions. Use both values when checking the intended string design and inverter operating window.

Open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current

Voc is the voltage with the output open-circuited; Isc is the current with the output short-circuited, under the stated test conditions. Apply the relevant temperature and irradiance corrections in design; these are not fixed upper limits or maximum-power operating values.

Temperature coefficients

Temperature changes voltage, current and power. Read the published coefficients with the project temperature assumptions instead of treating standard test values as all-weather output.

System and protection limits

Check maximum system voltage, maximum series fuse rating and other module limits in the exact datasheet against the system architecture and applicable engineering requirements.

Test conditions and tolerance

Distinguish standard test conditions (STC), conditions associated with nominal operating cell temperature (NOCT) or nominal module operating temperature (NMOT), and any bifacial test conditions stated in the document. Check tolerances separately; do not treat these conditions or temperature indicators as interchangeable.

Mechanical and document review

A technically suitable module must also fit the site, mounting plan and document requirements.

This part of the review turns a product comparison into an installation and procurement check.

Module format and layout

Use length, width and frame thickness to test row spacing, roof coverage, access routes, clamps and mounting geometry. Similar power classes can have materially different footprints.

Weight and handling

Connect module weight to structural review, lifting, on-site movement and installation method. A higher-power module can reduce module count while increasing the handling burden per unit.

Loads, frame and mounting zone

Check the published mechanical-load information and permitted mounting method for the exact model. Do not transfer a load value or clamp position from another module.

Cable, connector and junction-box details

Review cable length, connector and junction-box information alongside the electrical layout. Confirm compatibility through the project technical process rather than assuming components are interchangeable.

Warranty, certification and revision

Record the datasheet revision and verify required certificates and warranty documents separately. A datasheet summary does not replace the complete current documents required by the destination market.

Step 3 · Apply a review sequence

Move from project conditions to document verification.

This sequence keeps the shortlist connected to the installation, electrical design and purchasing context.

  1. Define the application

Record whether the project concerns a rooftop, commercial and industrial system, ground-mounted plant or another published application context.

  2. Set the target range

Use the required power range and market direction to form an initial shortlist without declaring a winner.

  3. Match the exact model

Keep the series, model code and power range together when opening the PDF and recording the comparison.

  4. Check mechanical fit

Review dimensions and weight against layout, mounting, structure, access and handling requirements.

  5. Complete the technical review

Use the full PDF for the electrical, mechanical, warranty and certification fields required by the project team.

  6. Submit the enquiry context

Provide the selected model, application, order requirements and destination for current availability and commercial terms.

Common reading errors

Four shortcuts that weaken a technical comparison.

A defensible comparison preserves model identity, source context and the boundary between published technical information and project-specific confirmation.

Comparing series names without model codes

A series is a navigation layer, not a substitute for the exact product reference.

Using maximum wattage as the whole specification

The upper end of a range does not describe dimensions, weight, electrical fields or project fit.

Treating efficiency as a universal ranking

Efficiency is one published field and should not erase format, system design or installation conditions.

Mixing technical data with availability or price

The datasheet identifies the product. Current availability and commercial terms belong to the project enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about reading photovoltaic module datasheets.

Can the highest efficiency value identify the best module?

No. Maximum efficiency is one comparison field. Model selection must also consider dimensions, weight, the complete electrical and mechanical specification, installation conditions and project requirements.

Can two models in the same series be treated as the same product?

No. Keep the exact model code and published power range with every technical reference and open the corresponding PDF.

Does a datasheet confirm current availability or price?

No. The datasheet is the technical source for the model. Availability and commercial terms are confirmed for the selected model, order requirements and destination.
