Operation and maintenance
How should a PV module cleaning and inspection plan be defined?
Build a site-specific photovoltaic module cleaning and inspection plan from approved instructions and observed conditions.
Short answer
Cleaning frequency and method should not be copied from a generic schedule. Use manufacturer instructions, site soiling, water quality, access, safety, weather, module condition and performance evidence to define approved tasks, triggers, records and escalation paths.
Operation and maintenance
Start from site conditions
Identify dust, pollen, salt, bird activity, industrial deposits, snow or other relevant exposure without assuming the same mechanism at every site. Use inspection and operating data to justify the schedule.
Control the cleaning method
Define permitted water, tools, pressure, temperature window, chemicals if allowed, electrical isolation and worker access. Avoid unsupported methods that may damage glass, coatings, frames, seals, cables or connectors.
Turn observations into action
Record module identity or array zone, date, condition, work performed and anomalies. Escalate cracks, delamination, hot spots, loose wiring or other concerns through the qualified maintenance process rather than treating cleaning as repair.
A condition-triggered maintenance work order
Link an intervention to an observed condition and an approved safe procedure.
Trigger
Location and serials / inspection observation / photos or monitoring context / priority / reason for action; no universal cleaning interval is assumed.
Approved work
Manufacturer restrictions / site isolation and access plan / trained personnel / accepted tools and water or cleaning method / environmental controls.
Closure
Work date / units treated / before-and-after observations / any damage or unresolved issue / next review trigger. A clean appearance alone is not proof of recovered energy.
Record template: replace prompts with project evidence and retain unresolved items. It does not authorize purchase, installation or release.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Should modules be cleaned on a fixed universal interval?
No. The interval should follow site evidence, approved instructions, safety and economic review.
Can any household detergent be used?
No. Use only methods and materials approved for the module and project conditions.
Does cleaning correct electrical faults?
No. Suspected electrical or thermal faults require separate qualified investigation and safe procedures.
